The Curonian Spit is a sand strip almost 100 km long between the Baltic Sea and the lagoon, a UNESCO World Heritage site; the Russian part is a national park.

The forest was planted in the 1960s. Nobody knows exactly why the trunks twisted — wind, caterpillars or soil.

A boardwalk leads through the forest to the sea, 30–40 minutes there and back.

Tips

  • There is an entry fee for the national park — check the current amount.
  • Stay on the boardwalk.
  • Come early in the morning.
