Day trips from Kaliningrad

Almost everything worth seeing in the region is 35–90 km away. Six ideas for one day — from seaside resorts to dunes and Teutonic castles.

Svetlogorsk — ~40 km

Cliffs with pines, a promenade, a funicular and old villas of former Rauschen. The train from the North Station takes about an hour. Stay for sunset.

Zelenogradsk — ~35 km

The oldest resort (former Cranz): a wide beach, promenade and famous cats. About 40 minutes by train. Easy to combine with the Curonian Spit.

Curonian Spit — 55–75 km

Dancing Forest, Efa Height, Rybachy and Fringilla. Needs a full day, best by car or on a tour. Paid national park entry.

Yantarny — ~50 km

Viewing platform over the amber quarry, the best beach in the region and Becker Park. Amber Museum in the city in the morning, Svetlogorsk in the evening (25 km along the coast).

Baltiysk — ~50 km

Russia’s westernmost town (former Pillau): lighthouse, warships, ferry to the Baltic Spit. Do not photograph military sites; bring a windbreaker any time of year.

Chernyakhovsk — Insterburg Castle, ~90 km

For those who have seen the sea: a Teutonic castle and old town. For more castles, see the 2-day “Castles of the East” route.
