Curonian Spit: how to get there from Kaliningrad and what to see

A sand spit of about 98 km between the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon, a UNESCO World Heritage site and national park. It starts right after Zelenogradsk.

How to get there

By car — the easiest way: from Kaliningrad via Zelenogradsk, then one road along the whole spit. It is about 40 km from Zelenogradsk to Efa Height.

By bus — buses run to Zelenogradsk and onto the spit, but not often. Check the timetable before you go.

On a tour — full-day trips start in Kaliningrad and Zelenogradsk, often with hotel pick-up. Simplest without a car.

Entry to the national park is paid at the gate. Check the current fee on the park website.

What to see

Dancing Forest (km 37) — pines twisted into rings and spirals. Stay on the boardwalk.

Efa Height (km 42, near Morskoye) — dunes over 60 m high with views of both sea and lagoon. Best at sunset.

Rybachy (~km 30) — a quiet lagoon village: church, boats and smoked fish for lunch.

Fringilla bird station (km 23) — giant traps for ringing migrating birds; best in April–May and September–October.

Planning the day

Start early — fewer groups in the morning. Order: Zelenogradsk → Fringilla → Rybachy → Dancing Forest → Efa for sunset.

Stay on the boardwalks and off the dunes — the sand is protected. Bring water, a hat and a windbreaker.

The spit runs to the Lithuanian border; check with the border service whether the Morskoye – Nida crossing is open before travelling.
